My 03 Cub Cadet 3204 should have its hydrostatic filter and oil changed every 150 hrs. of operation according to the owners manual. Tractor Supply Co. gets $10/qtfor this stuff and $10 for the filter. This tranny takes 5.5 qts. so this costs about $75 with tax just for the materials to do it myself. Are there any other brands of hydraulic fluid that will work well in this tractor?

The first service for the tranny just involves the filter and replace the oil that is lost -thats done under the first 20 hours of use...
To save money I suggest searching on the Internet or go to Lowes home centers for example they sell the quarts under $10...
There is no subsitute for this oil because its a synthetic blend made for Cub. I'm 100% sure on this (enough research with dealers across the country-all same answer) and its not the red Hytrans either by IH.

I have the same machine, see pictures...no complaints with anything

Just a quick note here but retail on the Cadet oil is only $28.00 a gallon. Why not use the original oil that is designed for it? ....

TSC and most all chain type farm stores sell lots of good stuff, and perhaps their fluids and filters are of the quality needed to protect your tractor, I really don't know. Even with one of my sons being in the oil business with a major oli company I still insist on using the dealer brand of fluid and filters. Fluid and fllters are free compared to parts and labor. Just my thoughts. Frank. ....

I've got an old 1861.
A couple years ago I got the hydraulic fluid from TSC, and about 150 hours later, it's still working fine.

BTW, with the "factory" fluid, I was replacing the pressure relief valves about every 75 hours of operation! ....

I am not sure what the Cub Cadet specs. are for the oil you need, but have you considered buying the Walmart brand fluids? Walmart sells tracotor transmission/hyd. & hyd. fluid. Just about all of the Walmart brand petroleum fluids are made for them by Shell. I used there tractor hydraulic fluid in my Kubota L245 with good results. Just another option to consider. ....

Redbob,

I'm pretty sure the 1861 was using the Red color hy-trans
fluid, but correct me if I'm wrong. Cub has been using the synthetic blend since the intro of the 3000 series and I think that was in 1999-2000 ?? It works very well, dosent lose color or foam up, and keep the temps down. It looked exactly the same after 150 hrs on my machine...The newer Fluid from Cub is more like 20w-50 sythetic from what I have heard, but so far nobodys found a exact replacement.
